Queen Latifah opens up about the time she decided to publicly come out.
In 2021, while accepting the Lifetime Achievement award at the BET Awards, Queen Latifah gave a special shoutout to her partner, Eboni Nichols.
During a recent interview with Angie Martinez, the New Jersey native explained why she decided to do it at that moment. “Well, it was Pride Day and s**t, and I can’t do just regular s**t,” she said.
Martinez laughed and said Latifah chose to do that. For many years, the “Ladies First” rapper had been quiet about her sexuality until that moment.
“I was getting a Lifetime Achievement Award, and I didn’t want to leave out the people who were part of the lifetime. That’s it. It was so not more complicated than that. It’s funny, because it’s not always that deep,” she said.
Latifah continued, “When I was growing up, or kind of hanging out, people, even in this business, are just so fascinated about people’s private lives. Is it because you’re curious? Is it because you’re intrigued?… I mind my business.”
She added, “This is not for me. I told everyone around me, don’t bring that s**t to me… I know a lot about a lot of different people, but it’s not really my place for me to share their business necessarily, you know?”
Queen Latifah will host the American Music Awards on Monday, May 25.
