Quinta Brunson is set to play the iconic Betty Boop in an upcoming movie.
According to reports, Brunson is also developing the film adaptation of the cartoon icon. The movie will focus on Boop’s origin and evolution from the perspective of the creator, Max Fleischer.
It is set to take a deep dive into the pressures that Fleischer faced while creating one of the world’s first cartoon icons. The movie will also show what happens when the cartoon begins to take a life of its own.
This movie will be Betty Boop’s first starring role since the 1930s. The movie will be produced through Brunson’s company, Fifth Chance Productions, and will be partnering with Mark Fleischer of Fleischer Studios.
“Betty Boop is one of our nation’s most beloved cartoon characters, yet somehow still remains pleasantly niche. She has had a quiet but undeniable impact on culture for nearly a century,” Brunson said. “After Erin and I met with Mark and learned more about his grandfather’s creation of Betty, I realized there was a much deeper story to tell. One that could be explored in a way that feels refreshing, subversive, and timeless, much like Betty herself.”
Erin Wehernberg is overseeing the film’s production for Fifth Chance Productions. Fleischer opens up about the time Brunson approached him with the idea for the film.
“Quinta so embodies Betty’s love of life, intelligence, humor, sassiness, and compassion that the relationship between her as Betty and Max burst into life at its mere mention,” Fleischer said.
