Eric Dane passes away at 53 years old.
Dane’s death was announced on Thursday, nearly a year after he revealed he was diagnosed with ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” his family said in a statement. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
The statement continued, “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the fight. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.”
Eric Dane became a heartthrob for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan, aka “McSteamy,” in the hit show Grey’s Anatomy. He would later land the role of Cal Jacobs in the HBO show, Euphoria.
Dane has been very open about his struggles with ALS since being diagnosed in April 2025. ALS is an incurable disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord which leads to the loss of muscle control.
During an interview in June 2025 with “Good Morning America,” Dane spoke about when he felt his first symptom. “I started experiencing some weakness in my right hand, and I didn’t really think anything of it at the time,” he explained. “I thought maybe I had been texting too much or my hand was fatigued. But a few weeks later, I noticed it had gotten a little worse.”
Last September, he was seen in a wheelchair at a Washington, D.C. airport. In December, he declared that he still wanted to act, although the disease was progressing.
“I still have my brain, and I still have my speech,” he said while on the “I Am ALS and Brilliant Minds panel. He also stated that he was willing to do “just about anything.”
We will keep his family and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers during this time.
