It’s day 2 of Black Music Month and today I want to spotlight what I think is one of the best music documentaries out, Summer of Soul.
This Oscar winning documentary, which is streaming on Hulu and Disney+, gives fans a look into the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival that took place in Harlem 1969 over a course of six Sundays from June 29 to August 24 in Mount Morris Park.
The film was directed by QuestLove and the footage had never been seen by anyone before. It was considered to be lost before being found by musician/director. Summer of Soul is filled with modern-day interviews from the people who attended, the performers who were a part of the six week concert, and many other people.
When watching this film, fans will get a chance to see some of their favorite legends such as Nina Simone, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Stevie Wonder, The Staple Singers, and more. They will also take a cultural dive into music from other cultures as well.
