    Black Music Month: Jekalyn Carr Declaring That God Will Change Your Story

    With today being Pentecost Sunday, we celebrated the Holy Ghost and how it’s because of the Holy Ghost, that many of our stories have changed for the good.

    There has been one song that has been heavy on my heart that fits perfectly with today and that is the song “Changing Your Story” by Jekalyn Carr.

    This song came to me when I was at one of the lowest parts of my life. I was really doubting myself and God for not showing up when I asked him to do so. We all know that God is an on-time God, He will always show up and show out in your favor. However, during that time, it was Carr’s song that I used as a declaration for myself that God will change my story and he did just that.

    I hope that this song does the same for you and that you know that God will change your story, but be patient, stay focused on Him, and trust His Word.

    Black Music Month: Candi Staton Exposed Her Pain Through Disco

    As I keep the momentum going, today I want to spotlight the beautiful and talented Candi Staton.

    Growing up, it was like a rite of passage to learn and know “Young Hearts Run Free”, and “Victim”. At the time I didn’t understand why these two songs were such a staple to Black women, (mostly because I learned about her when I was about 5).

    Nonetheless, when I became friends older, I learned that Ms. Staton was singing about her pain, the abuse she had suffered at the hands of the man that she loved, and simply detailed that man will be a man in doing the woman in his life wrong.

    Unbeknownst to her and generations that came after her, these two songs have become words of encouragement, high praise of her bravery, and staples at the family cookouts.

    I want you enjoy these two songs the utmost appreciation and respect for Candi Staton.

    Black Music Month: ‘Not Tonight’ The Women Collab We Don’t Appreciate

    Today is Day 4 of Black Music Month and I want to spotlight a song that I didn’t appreciate the voices on it until I got older.

    Not Tonight by Lil Kim featuring Lisa ‘Lefteye’ Lopes, Da Brat, Angie Martinez, and Missy Elliott, is and will forever be a timeless classic. So much so it is very much appreciated in this day and age.

    As I was listening to this song recently it dawned on me how much I didn’t appreciate this song when it first came out, although I was about 6 or 7 years old at the time. But there was nothing that can be said to me when Lefteye’s part came on because in that moment, I was her.

    With that being said, I want to publicly show my appreciation for this song by spotlighting it today. It’s also the perfect song to kick off this weekend with your girls! Enjoy.
