Meet Yesenia Moises: An Afro-Latina Author And Illustrator Showing Why Representation Matters In Children’s Books

Did you know that 6% of children’s books feature Latinx characters? Although that percentage is really low, there is one author who is willing to change that. Yesenia Moises, an author and illustrator dedicated to bridging the gap in Latinx representation in children’s books.

A Bronx native with Dominican roots, Moises grew up around diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultures, particularly Black and Brown individuals. Her experiences would later lead her to a career path as an author and illustrator.

Before becoming an author, Moises explained that she started as an illustrator and created a picture book. Shortly after that, a publisher reached out and asked her to work on a book and its cover. While illustrating, she discovered a newfound passion.

“I found that there was a passion that I didn’t know about for wanting to bring stories to life,” she said. “It led me to knocking on lots of doors. asking a lot of questions until I was able to write a story of my own.”

Throughout her journey, Moises learned very quickly that many Latinx authors often don’t get their stories. However, she has the opportunity to do so with her latest book, Sounds Like Joy.

“Sounds Like Joy is an underwater musical adventure that celebrates the magic of music and its power to bring everyone together,” she said.

She continued, “It’s a fun read-along experience filled with a lot of onomatopoeias that make it a really engaging read for both the reader and the audience.”

The book itself was meticulously created to include the sounds and rhythms of Moises’ childhood, including merengue, bachata, and salsa.

“I took time with the concept of this story because I wanted it to have a certain sound while it’s being read. There’s some rhythm in the words.” Aside from the rhythm of the words, Moises added that this story and the artwork are a love letter to everyone who has ever told her that her art made them smile.

The book is available in stores nationwide in English and Spanish under the title Suena Aleria as well as online. Make sure you get your copy. It will be a great gift for the holiday season.
