On Monday, May 21st, 2018, the National Association of Black Journalists announced that Jemele Hill will be NABJ’s 2018 Journalist of the Year. The announcement was made in a press release by NABJ, citing her efforts as a journalist. “The annual award recognizes a black journalist who has amassed a distinguished body of work with extraordinary depth, scope, and significance to the people of the African Diaspora.” NABJ recognizes Hill for using her platform to address national, cultural, and social issues. In September of 2017, Hill had the internet ablaze when she stated that Donald Trump is a white supremacist and when she stated her opinion on athletes’ stand on taking a knee against police brutality.Hill has become such a household name in more ways than one. Once she heard about the news her response was, “It would be a serious understatement to call this recognition from NABJ special. This organization has been a second family for me, both personally and professionally,” Hill said. “I am humbled to be honored by an organization whose values not only match my own journalistically but has tirelessly dedicated itself to developing and nurturing journalists like me. “This is the biggest accomplishment of my career.”The NABJ Convention will take place in Detroit, where Hill is originally from, on August 4th, 2018 at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center.
