Jarvis Butts has died in prison just two weeks after he was sentenced for the murder of 13-year-old Na’Ziyah Harris.
According to reports, the Michigan Department of Corrections revealed that Butts died on Thursday at the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center. His death is being investigated as a suicide.
On March 12, he pled guilty to Harris’ murder and was sentenced to 35 to 60 years in prison. During his sentencing, the judge stated, “Mr. Butts, you’re going to have many years to sit and dwell on your horrible actions.”
In exchange for his plea, Butts was ordered to inform the court of the location of Harris’ body, which has not been found. In January 2024, Na’Ziyah Harris disappeared after getting off the bus in Detroit. Evidence revealed that she was going to meet Butts.
Kym Worthy, the Wayne County Prosecutor, said that he had been grooming the 13-year-old since 2022. Harris was also allegedly pregnant at the time of her murder, and Butts was allegedly the father.
Prosecutors stated that Butts’ online search history revealed he was looking up abortions, abortion pills, and drinking red antifreeze.
Butts was also charged with sex crimes against five other girls, with the youngest being 4 years old.
