Derek Chauvin is currently in police custody.
Chauvin, the arresting police officer who was seen with his knee on Floyd’s neck ask he gasped for air saying “I Can’t Breathe”, was taken into custody by Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension on Friday. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety announced in a brief news conference.
This announcement of Chauvin’s arrest comes shortly after Governor Tim Walz called for a restoration of justice after protesters set the police station on fire.
Chauvin, along with three other officers were fired after the video went viral and sparked outrage among the city of Minneapolis and the nation.
Chauvin has been charged with three degree murder and manslaughter.
There is no word yet on if the three other officers will be arrested and charged as well.
