    An Aaliyah Tribute To Be Held In Prospect Park This Weekend

    Brooklyn is gearing up to show some love to one of its own, the late Aaliyah.

    According to reports, on Saturday, August 8, BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! will be celebrating the late singer with her own party; Aaliyah: One in a Million.

    The celebration will take place at the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park and it is completely free! This event will have DJs, live music, fashion, films, and personal stories paying tribute to the Brooklyn-born singer on the 25th anniversary of her passing.

    The event is set to start at 3 pm; although RSVPs are not required they are encouraged. This celebration will be hosted by journalist, Brittany Spanos (Rolling Stone and Variety). It will also have fellow Brooklynite Taja Cheek aka L’Rain serve as the music director while DJs Nyla Simone, Honey Bun, and albertoreyes will keep the Aaliyah hits in heavy rotation.

    Designer Karl Kani, whose clothes became a part of Aaliyah’s signature will host a pop-up boutique as well as raffle of three motorcycle jackets.

    Aaliyah was on January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, before moving to Detroit as a child. On August 25, 2001, she passed away in a tragic plane crash. Although, she is gone, her legacy and influence continues to live on.

    Tina Turner Posthumously Honored With A Statue In Hometown

    Tina Turner’s legacy immortalized in her rural hometown in Tennessee.

    The singer was posthumously awarded with a 10-foot bronze statue that stands in Brownsville, Tennessee. The unveiling took place during the annual Tina Turner Heritage Days at a park.

    The statue is near the town of Nutbush, where the late singer went to school. It was created by sculptor Fred Ajanogha.

    He captured Turner mid-performance with a microphone in her hand. Ajanogha said that he wanted to capture Turner’s “flexibility of movement on stage.”

    According to reports, over 50 donors contributed to help bring the statue to life. Fans of Turner from all over was at the unveiling where expressed how they felt about the statue.

    Karen Cook, a Georgia resident, said, “She’s a great, I love her music.” She continued, “It’s a big deal and a great thing for the community to have Tina Turner in her small town.”

    Tina Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush. She would later become Tina Turner as she became a superstar, breaking barriers and setting a path for many to follow behind her. She passed away in 2023 in Küsnacht, Switzerland, at 83 years old.

    The UK’s Privy Council, the highest court in the country has come to the decision that Kartel’s appeal has been quashed. It is now up to Jamaica’s Court of Appeal to retry the case.

    However, until Jamaica’s Court of Appeal comes to a decision, the “Romping Shop,” singer will remain behind bars.
