A few weeks ago, the Supreme Court temporarily restored nationwide access to the abortion pill. The ruling has paused the restriction of telehealth mail-order delivery and prescribing. Candidate Laura Dunn speaks her mind about it.
Although the ruling is in effect for now, uncertainty remains for women’s reproductive rights. Dunn, a congressional candidate for District 12, speaks about this decision and what this means for women’s overall health.
Dunn explained that for years, women’s health has not been taken seriously, mostly due to misogyny. “For decades, legislation affecting women’s bodies, reproductive healthcare, maternal care, and even medical research priorities has largely been shaped by men,” she said. “And I think a big part of the problem is that too few women are actually in the rooms where these decisions are made.”
She continued, “If we want women’s health to truly be taken seriously. We need more women in office who understand these issues because they live them too. And that starts with women supporting and electing women candidates who reflect and understand our healthcare needs because they are theirs too.”
There is uncertainty among women about this temporary halt and how many will take advantage of it until it is over. “We have already seen spikes in demand whenever reproductive rights come under attack because women do not trust that those rights will still exist tomorrow,” Dunn added.
She continued, “Our autonomy has become a political pawn instead of a human right. Women are being forced to make deeply personal healthcare decisions based on legal chaos and political ideology instead of what is best for their health and futures. Our healthcare should not depend on which judge rules on a case that week.”
As the polls are opening and people are making their way to the polls, Candidate Laura Dunn believes that support for women’s rights and health is on the horizon.
“The future depends on electing candidates who do not treat women’s rights like an afterthought,” she said. Dunn, who is currently running, said that she’s the only woman consistently talking about women’s rights and healthcare. “Reproductive freedom, maternal healthcare, equal pay, childcare, and protections from violence are not side issues to me.”
