Breonna Taylor’s family has reached a very huge settlement with the City of Louisville months after the 26-year-old EMS worker was gunned down in her apartment as she slept.
CNN reported that the city has agreed to pay the family $12 million as a settlement of the wrongful death suit. Greg Fischer, Louisville Mayor, is set to make the settlement announcement later Tuesday during a joint press conference with Taylor’s family.
Taylor’s family filed the wrongful death suit against the city after Louisville Metro Police officers knocked down the door to Breonna’s apartment and fatally shot her as they were executing a late-night “no-knock” warrant in a drug investigation. The shooting took place on March 13th.
Taylor’s boyfriend was also in the house at the time of the shooting, was legally armed, and told reporters that he believed that the home was being broken into. He ultimately shot and injured an officer. The officers were not wearing anybody cameras.
After hearing about the settlement, a social justice organization named Until Freedom released their own statement. “No amount of money will bring back Breonna Taylor. We see this settlement as the bare minimum you can do for a grieving mother,” they continued. “The city isn’t doing her any favors. True justice is not served with cash settlements. We need those involved in her murder to be arrested and charged. We need accountability. We need justice.”
The police who were involved in the murder of Breonna Taylor has not been arrested as of yet.
