Rashida Jones announces her departure from MSNBC after making history in 2021.
Jones has decided to resign from her position after joining MSNBC in 2013. By 2021, she was promoted to the highest role in the company. She became the first Black female to lead a major news network. Jones made the shocking announcement via a memo.
“I came to this decision over the holidays while reflecting on our remarkable journey and the many successes we’ve achieved together as a team,” she wrote. “This has been the most rewarding chapter of my professional career, and I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished, which has been made possible only by you.”
During her time as the lead, Rashida Jones worked through an intense period of modern media history. She navigated through the pandemic and dealt with social justice issues and various political cycles.
Aside from that, she also broke record-setting viewership numbers and made sure that MSNBC remained as a trusted news source for millions of Americans, as reported by Essence.
NBCUniversal Media Group chairman Mark Lazarus spoke highly of Jones. “Rashida has expertly navigated MSNBC through a years-long, unrelenting, and unprecedented news cycle, all while driving the network to record viewership and making investments in nonlinear businesses,” he said in a statement.
Rebecca Kutler, MSNBC’s senior vice president of content strategy, will be the interim president until the company finds a permanent replacement.
